Color, humor and animation are important aspects of my work. Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel, Flemish art and Japanese woodblock prints were all early influences. Growing up on a farm as a child I played and fantasized in the large barns in the back of my house. Working with my hands I assembled special environments for myself and these became my living sculptures. Years later I became a sculptor of paper, creating indoor environments on a larger scale…”
Most of my artwork references nature, the nature of the human condition and how intertwined they are. I have always considered nature to be spiritual and when man disrespects nature, both suffer.
“I am a storyteller and an observer of nature and the nature of the human condition …
What I use
Materials in Mixed Media Art
I have experimented with different materials over the years starting with fabric which I hand dyed and turned into 3D sculptures. Papermaking intrigued me, especially casting paper dimensionally from plaster molds. Eventually I found paper limiting as all materials are in some way so I turned to mixed media using lightweight aluminum, wire, foam, clay and found materials. I now describe myself as a mixed media sculptor.
Installations
Life offers challenges to be embraced; so for the last 6 years I have created sculpture for temporary site specific installation. Utilizing materials to endure the elements.
Sculptures
Abstract imagery has never appealed to me. I respond to the human/animal form in an emotional way.
